How Will discovered his passion for communication, writing, and storytelling
"The first essay I ever wrote in high school was about my name. This prompt asked me to find the purpose of my name. Simple I thought. Both my parents are immigrants from El Salvador, and they clearly understood the prejudices that plague this country. I began to understand why Spanish was not spoken in my home, why we did not celebrate Latin holidays, or why I had a "white sounding" name. My parent's story of choosing to name me William to help my future resume was rattling. I was so young that this detail was lost in the recess of my mind. Then in college, I read bell hooks and was inquired to write about my experience with education. Learning about institutional racism and transgressive pedagogies, all the threads connected. Something as simple as a name was an action, and this is my reaction.
Through writing I meditated on the events mentioned above, and I realized that language for social action is what I want to do. Whether through film, photography, or print, I want to author content that contributes to our social conciseness. "
