Alright we have another Twitter trend that I cannot wait to cut to the chase about. Did you see what I did there? Ahh, sweet puns, the icing on the cake of language. Okay, enough of that! Let's get to today's topic.
The recent, "everything is cake" meme popped up almost out of nowhere. In trying to do some research I could not exactly pinpoint how this meme started. What I do know is that the video screenshot below has been one of the most circulated posts under the trend. With almost 30 million views it's safe to say you may have seen this on your feed under the hashtag #cake.
The responses to this meme have been hilarious to say the least. From people breaking their electronics saying, "not everything is cake" to others joking about our planet being a hyper-real cake, Twitter is having a field day.
This post is dedicated to the recents meme about, "everything is a cake." It's a meme where people joke about how objects that don't look anything like care are actually a pastry. Again, I cannot track where the trend started but I'm sure there was some kind of visual element. I can see the allure of this trend because who doesn't love a good baking show? Whether it's The Great British Bakeoff or Cake Boss we're inherently fascinated by the artistry that goes into making cakes.
This trend takes that interest and just hyperbolizes it by focusing again on hyper real images. Like that cake actually did look like toilet paper! And that flower pot, wow, who knew you could do that with cake?!
However, things have gone somewhat dark in the everything is cake fun. There have been posts ranging from people questioning if they're just cake to cutting their friends to see if they're cake. Below are some screenshots on some of these reactions and responses that kind of went the dark humor route.
I think that trends on Twitter are special in that the most random things can be sensational. The cake meme on Twitter blew up, but for the most part I've seen it stay in the realm of Twitter. Currently I'm following some trends to write about but this one did deserve it's own sweet post.
Let me know have you seen or heard of this trend? And what's your favorite #cake? If you come across a trend or meme you'd like me to react to tag me! @Willsshowem

It takes a lot to break the internet but leave it to the Smiths, in this case Jada Pinkett Smith, to reign over Twitter and usher in one of the greatest new memes of 2020. Over the weekend of July 10th, Twitter blew up as news broke of Jada Pinkett Smith and Will Smith both confirmed her connection to American singer August Alsina. We know it was a romantic relationship because it was confirmed by Alsina himself.
However, the best part about all of this media frenzy that’s come out isn’t really the details on The Smiths personal life and history. No. The real nugget of this whole moment is Jada Pinkett Smith uttering the instantly iconic phrase, "I got into an entanglement.” This right here this is what we’re here to talk about. Because as soon as Pinkett Smith said this Twitter and TikTok wasted no time in low key airing their own laundry and their own entanglements.
If you head to Twitter and type in #entanglement I guarantee you will find a rich set of memes, GIFs, and edits that leave you in tears. In trying to write this post I got sucked into #entanglement and I had to pull myself out. One could say I was in an entanglement with Twitter… See I was in an entanglement with my phone, but for Millennials and Gen Z what they think this word means is a bit different from what I mean.
Below are screenshots of some of my favorite memes:
One thing we have to discuss is while entanglement actually means one thing, the connotation that’s circulating is coming from the context of Pinkett Smith’s utterance. While the denotation of entanglement just means being tied up in a complex situation, the way #entanglement is being used refers to a relationship that’s either romantic or sexual. It took Urban Dictionary almost no time to answer people’s question of, “What does entanglement mean?”
We have to remember that Urban Dictionary is crowd sourced platform, meaning that people can create their own definitions and others vote on it. Essentially people are creating discourse, yeah, sorry for the big words, on words that already exist. It's actually so interesting to think about how we're making meaning around things that already exist... Anyways here's what UD has has their top definition for the now infamous word.
Some of my favorite ways I’ve seen people say that they were in entanglements is in memes about them avoiding work, talking about their hookups, or just as excuses for almost anything. If I were to tell my boss, whose much older than me, that I missed a meeting because of an entanglement I don't think he'd question me. It would essentially mean the same as I was busy with something else. However, if my friend asked me why I didn't reply to them and I said, "I was in an entanglement" it would totally mean something else. "Spill the T!" is probably how my friend would respond.
This is all to say that it should come as no shocker that words definitions sometimes don't translate across generations. I am in Gen Z and I know both what this world actually means what what Jada Pinkett Smith's entanglement means. Just know how you're using this word and who you're using it with. Because you don't want to have to untangle yourself out of some drama should you say you're in an entanglement. But now the question arises, how do you know if you know if you're in one of these complex situations?
How do you know if you're in an ENTANGLEMENT?
When people my age are talking about being in entanglements with their hookups, or exes, or friends with benefits, it's more of a play on the complicated depth of Pinkett Smith's statement. I think that if you're in an entanglement you know it. You know when you're in a bad relationship. And just like The Smiths talked about their issues and getting out of it, if we feel tied up in a mess we have to undo it too.
While people are parodying Pinkett Smith’s line I must say that I respect her and Will Smith for being honest and open the way they have. Talking about relationship issues and marital issues, especially in such a public way, takes guts and real courage.
We can all keep saying that we’re in #entanglements but it’s worth remembering that sometimes we also do need to get untangled back up.
Let me know, did you know what entanglement meant or did you have to look it up? Or, what's your favorite #entanglement meme? If you liked this post make sure to share it and tag me @ Willsshowem so I can entangle you in a social media shoutout!

Stylish face masks and face coverings and where to buy them
I hope I don’t need to explain why face masks are essential in today’s world. You near the news talking about face coverings. The CDC is talking about face masks. Mr. CA Gov. Gavin Newsom is telling you to wear them. I don’t know why these Karens are all gagging. But the of face masks is here. The category of this post is face coverings, and she is the moment.
As I, like many, have grown comfortable to socially distant world I’ve also grown accustomed to carrying a mask as part of my everyday carry ons. Not only is wearing a face mask the responsible thing to do but it can also be a safe and stylish addition to your summer fashions. Here’s a roundup of some of my favorite face masks and where to buy them for your summer 2020 styles and fits.
SLIP® DOUBLE-SIDED SILK FACE COVERING - $39.00
You may be familiar with Slip® as the brand with the best silk pillow sheets and eye masks, but did you know they also make face masks? Well now you do! When I found these silk face masks, I copped them real quick and I cannot recommend them enough. The masks are made from the same luxurious silk, their trademarked Slipsilk™, that makes all of their products amazing.
You might think it's extra to opt-in for a silk face covering, and you're right! But you know that on Words by Will we are all about living lavish! I opted in for the classic black and a fun leopard print. With these silk face coverings you’re not only treating your skin right but you're also giving back.
Here’s how SLIP is giving back, “Slip® will donate 5% of the RRP from the sale of each slip® re-usable face-covering in the U.S to BABY2BABY in the period from June 18 to September 18, 2020, with a minimum donation of $75,000 USD.”
Black Cotton Mask With Filter Space - Etsy $5-15
What can I say other than black is always in style! Before the mandates on face coverings grew in scope, I made sure to secure a mask for the bag. That is my everyday bag that I use only when leaving for essential outings. I’ll link below to an Etsy page full of cotton masks. The mask I have is just a plain one but with an opening for a filter. I recommend a style of face mask that offers this for added protection.
Old Navy Variety 5-Pack of Triple-Layer Cloth Face Masks for Adults - $ 12.50
These fabric masks by Old Navy are a recent find and soon became a recent buy. That is to say I love! These masks are made from the same fabrics as Old Navy’s apparel. I bought two sets of these masks because I wanted both variety and because more is more. What makes these a stylish face mask recommendation is the variety of colors that you can choose from!
Head to their website and you'll see an array of colors and hues sure to fit almost any outfit and vibe you've got planned for summer 2020. The colors I bought include the Utility set (neutrals and greens) and the Warm Multi set (red gradients).
I also liked these masks because of Old Navy’s commitment to giving back, read here from their website, “Old Navy is proud to be donating 50,000 of these masks to the Boys & Girls Clubs of America. Additionally, Gap Inc. is supplying millions of PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) to frontline healthcare workers.”
Real SEWING Fabric FACE MASKS - $8-$10
I’ve seen friends and creators across social media making face masks. We love to see it! I also love being able to use whatever platform I have to showcase some amazing work by people making a meaningful difference. In this post I want to give a shoutout to Real Sewing, a stylish and affordable face mask recommendation from one of my friends Stephanie Bueno.

Shop Alisha Marie - Face masks - $11
Along with being one of my favorite YouTubers, Alisha Marie is also a stylish figure I closely follow. She is the reason I'm now starting to wear white! Like if you know me, you know I practically lived in all black for almost 23 years!
Alisha Marie recently released a set of face masks that are not only stylish, but inspirational as well! The PS You Got This Mask is Alisha's way of giving back because some of the profits from this mask will be donated to The Jed Foundation.
Here's her website's statement, "Encouragement is what we need. P.S. You've Got This Babe Mask will give the positive energy people around you need!
Social distancing and the overall uncertainty of everything happening in the world right now has definitely taken a toll on my mental health (and I am sure so many others feel the same way), so I wanted to give back to The Jed Foundation (JED).
Proceeds of this sale will go back to The Jed Foundation!"
I'm curious to know what face masks are you currently rocking? Tag me on social media @Willsshowem I'd love to share and re share your posts! And let me know if you buy any of the masks featured in this post.

Disclaimer - These face masks and face coverings are not medical grade.
CENTER FOR DISEASE CONTROL (CDC) ADVISORY
CDC recommends wearing cloth face coverings in public settings where other social distancing measures are difficult to maintain (e.g., grocery stores and pharmacies) especially in areas of significant community-based transmission. CDC says face covers should be routinely washed depending on the frequency of use, and that machine washing should suffice in properly cleaning a face cover.
There is something weird and fulfilling about getting ready while having nowhere to go. I think that for many of us, getting ready, whether that means dressing outside of a groutfit or stepping up on the grooming and styling, is what helps us stay motivated when we spend all day on Zoom calls. For me, getting ready get into the right mindset to tackle a day of emails and video conference calls.
I’ll be first to admit that I get tired of back-to-back Zoom calls. Unlike the days of in-person meetings, I feel like I’m spending my life on Zoom. Like for some reason, bosses think that just because we’re all home they can keep us hostage online for hours. Whereas social distancing we could grab some conference room catering and coffee and bounce saying we had, “a previous commitment.”
Enough about me airing my grievances. Let’s talk about my 5 essentials that help me feel great and get through a full day on Zoom!
5 zoom meetings tips
1. Don’t ever be without pen and paper in zoom meetings
I am firm believer in the power of handwritten notes. While I do have email reminders and digital calendars, I must always have a notebook on hand. Whether I use this to take notes, write a to-do list, or just track my thoughts, having a notebook’s company during Zooms is essential.
Plus, you can have fun with your notebooks too! I love highlighting my pages, organizing them with little hand drawn details and things of that nature. I’m not saying you have to be that annoying person who spends hours designing bullet journals, #extra even for me, or buying a designer notebook. Like have you seen those LV notebooks!? That’s a flex alright.
Have fun with your notebooks and just always have on hand. Zoom meetings can be ramble sessions but sometimes you’ll hear nuggets of info you’ll want to remember.
2. Keep your lips hydrated for back-to-back zoom meetings
Have you ever noticed how many times you actually put on lip balm in a day? I know I didn’t think much of how much I reached for a chap stick until I actually saw myself doing it during Zoom meetings. Reapplying lip balm wasn’t distracting to anyone but me and I knew it. But again, I’m sitting in front of my laptop’s camera constantly and I want to feel comfortable doing that.
A recent discovery, and an everyday staple in my skincare routine is the Summer Friday’s Vanilla Lip Butter Balm. Let me tell you I. Am. Obsessed! Vanilla is hands down one of my favorite flavors, it’s up there with PSL (by the way, Summer Fridays also makes a pumpkin-scented face mask and I’m also obsessed). I love this stuff, and recommend it for Zoom meetings, because I’ll put it on, and several Zoom meetings later my lips are nowhere near feeling dry and uncomfortable!
Plus, the Summer Friday lip butter is a great all-around lip treatment. Whether you’re about to go outside, get a workout on, or you leave it on overnight, your lips will stay hydrated and free of ever feeling crusty.
3. Find a concealer that works for you and not against you
While you not be meeting people face-to-face the stress of zoom meetings and just this current moment can be brutal to your complexion. Before stay home orders, we at least had the drive home to escape and mentally get a break. But with most of us working at home our sanctuaries now double as stress incubators.
I’ve noticed that my skin has had some breakouts which surprised me. I was surprised to see some redness or acne flairs considering I wasn’t going out as much and being exposed to pollutants. But between wearing cotton face masks that could congest my skin or working out at home in cramped and hotter conditions than normal, my skin was stressing.
When I discovered the Sephora Collection Clear and Cover Acne Treatment, I felt I found gold. This baby not only covers up any acne, but it also doesn’t work against clearing your skin. It actually has some salicylic acid in its formula to work towards clearing your skin. Even though my laptop’s camera can capture the whole mug, for those days when I got a Rudolph moment going on, glowing and red, I got this baby to do the job.
4. Find a cc cream that helps you bounce from zoom meetings back to real life
For all the guys out there, or for those who you send this blog to, let me tell you that real men wear makeup! Listen, I am no MUA, but I do know a thing a or two about the benefits of makeup. I dabbled into the realm of cosmetics not too long ago and I actually got into it because of my work. In case you didn’t know, I work not only in theatrical publicity, but I also work on awards campaigns. During my favorite season of the year, again awards season, I was constantly jumping around between events and red carpets.
Because first impressions mean everything in this industry, I wanted to make sure I felt good. I felt the most confident when I knew my skin was matte and that my skin tone was even. Thus, by feeling good I would look better on camera and behind the scenes too. Despite live events being traded for Zoom meetings and Zoom webinars, I still love this IT Cosmetics CC cream because if I ever just want to take a break, I’m ready to grab my mask and go outside.
This cream both covers up imperfections and actually has SPF in its formula! You can go from a Zoom meeting to a Trader Joe’s run in no time!
5. Stay HYDRATEd during zoom meetings and THROUGHOUT the day
Listen you hear it all the time and I’m here to remind you, drink water! Don’t just drink your iced coffee, or your La Croix, or whatever other beverage you drink that’s not classic liquid ice. It is so important to drink water whether you’re in meetings or not.
Part of how I actually stay focused and productive is by staying hydrated. Your skin will glow and your body and mind will feel right. I swear Summer Fridays is not sponsoring this post, I just had to share an idea of how water bottles can be stylish and a trendy everyday accessory.
Yes, I do feel like I’m going to the bathroom all the time. However, that’s a small sacrifice for the benefits that drinking water provides. The next time you’re about to hop into a Zoom Meeting grab a glass of water and *insert TikTok voice* get into it!
As mentioned, this post is not sponsored by Summer Fridays and I am also currently not affiliated with them.
I just love their products and am part of the rewards program with some cool perks including the following: Click below or copy and paste the URL link below for a $5 coupon when purchasing from their website.

Let me know which of these tips/products you'll be trying the next time you've got a day on Zoom! Was your favorite tip? What are some of your tips?

I have always loved fashion, but it wasn’t a love that I wore on my sleeve, unlike my staple gold Coach bangle. My relationship with fashion was an admiration from afar. It took me almost two decades before I could look in a mirror and be happy with what I saw. Because I didn’t know any better, I let trends define my vision of fashion and who could be fashionable. I subscribed to a limited perspective created by forces like influencers and social media. Thus, while the Gucci Marmont trend blew up on social media, I'm more than proud to call this belt a staple in my luxury collection in 2020 and for the rest of my life.
Here’s the things, fashion is an industry that doesn't showcase diversity or practice inclusion. From not showcasing different body types, dark skinned and Black models, and erasing trans and differently abled bodies, fashion perpetuates monolithic structures of exclusion and discrimination. For this conversation I want to draw focus to how these forms of oppression flourish in things like trends. In my case, part of how I learned to love my body was by unlearning the trends and ideas that I thought were fashion.
In college I took a course called, “Getting Dressed: Discourses of Fashion” where I studied different fashion histories, houses, and most importantly, philosophies. In this course, learned what fashion was and what it was not. I learned that trends are just that, quick moments in time. But fashion is more than just a picture on Instagram, fashion is a language. And like all languages, change and justice can be created when used justly.
One day my homework assignment was to create a dream look book. I vividly remember the first thing I wrote down was, “I want a Gucci Marmont belt!” For those unfamiliar with Gucci’s history, they may think this belt was made for Instagram. And those who know, know that 2016 is when Gucci released the Marmont collection.
Why the Gucci Marmont trend is a timeless Collection
The Gucci Marmont belt, she was the belt-no she was the moment that marked my revolution against the tyranny of trends. This belt flooded social media in the mid-2010s. Every influencer and wannabe influencer were rocking this Gucci monogram belt. However, being the luxury fashion house that it is, Gucci does not follow trends. Gucci like all luxury fashion houses transcends trends. And the Gucci Marmont belts, bags, and collection are timeless.
The Gucci Marmont collection born under the reign of current creative director Alessandro Michel was inspired by Gucci in the 1970s. (If you want to learn more about Gucci, but also just need a good movie recommendation, check out The Director (2013) by Christina Voros. It’s a great behind-the-scenes look at Gucci’s history, the people behind the magic, and how they shape their iconic runways.) Obviously, understanding what’s a classic and what’s a trend in fashion is hard.
Before I make any luxury purchase, I investigate a few dimensions of the brand and the item. Some things I consider are the brand’s history, the collection's inspiration, and even its resale value. Making a luxury purchase to follow a trend can make you feel guilty later. While I discovered the Gucci Marmont belt on social media, I bought it during a key moment in time. I bought my belt during my first trip to Boston, MA, surrounded by my friends, after having been on a serious health grind for about 6-months.
As I wrote before, fashion is inherently exclusionary. But like other languages, fashion can be used to speak one’s own truth and for social justice. I remember seeing physiques wearing Gucci belts that were far from mine. These sculpted and gorgeous figures created a restrictive vision of who I thought could wear a designer belt. Trends find their power by creating exclusion. Trends also come and go in style and relevancy. Because fashion is forever that means that fashion has the potential to act as a way of creating change for the better.
I cannot think of a better quote about fashion and its timelessness then this one from current Gucci creative director Alessandro Michele, “For me, nothing is old. I don't know why. If a dress is beautiful, and it's very personal, I think it can live forever.”
Now there are some designer brands who cater to fast fashion and hype beast culture. Think the Balenciaga Speed Trainers, aka the ones that look like socks. Even if you come across videos or blogs talking about why you should leave the Gucci Marmont collection behind, ask yourself, “What does this person know about fashion?” To all those who say the trend is dead I say, "Who tf cares!" I will continue posting in my belt proudly celebrating myself, my identity, and my body-going against the abs and size 0 waists I saw rocking this belt when it trended.
Remember, fashion is a language. Just like you may have catchphrases, quips, and isms in your speech, your fashion style is unique too. Whether you have a Gucci Marmont belt or it’s on your wish list I say own it! Luxury fashion like Gucci is not fast fashion.
I’m curious to hear from you, what’s your hot take on fashion and trends? Is there a trend that introduced you to fashion? Or, what’s your favorite fashion house?
